A speciality of our local expert jewellers at Metal Urges in Hobart, is mokume gane. Mokume gane receives its name from the wood grain pattern that was created in the forging of swords and edged weapons in Japan between the 17th and 19th century.

Mokume Gane Process
Its distinctive layered pattern is made through the heavy compression of mixed metals, fused in interleaved layers. We only use quality 18ct yellow gold, 18ct white gold, 18ct rose gold and silver in a mokume gane jewellery piece. The patterns on each unique piece are hand carved- therefore no two pieces are ever the same.

History of Mokume Gane
Mokume gane receives its name from the wood grain pattern that was created in the forging of swords and edged weapons in Japan between the 17th and 19th century.
As the customary Japanese sword stopped serving as a weapon and became largely a status symbol, demand arose for elaborate decorative handles and sheaths created through fusing together layers of mild steel and carbon steel.
